Best Alternative to Condo: No Maintenance Fee, Bare Minimum Other Costs
You might agree with us or not, but we always enjoy saving on unnecessary expenses. We don’t see any sense in paying outrageous monthly fees condo buildings collect, either.
We’ve put extra efforts into making this house well insulated, and converted all possible electrical devices to natural gas ones.
As a result – enjoy now great savings on energy bills!
Without being stingy - we leave outside lights on till late, take regular saunas, generously water our lawn and garden - all we pay is:
- for gas: from just $29 in summer to maximum of $124 in the coldest month of the year, which comes to an average of $70.95 per month,
- for water and electricity together: $127.71 on average per month.
See the chart below:

Oh, and our property taxes are al low as $3,372 a year.
Does this look attractive to you?

Dream Garden Project Plan
We wanted to turn original plain-grass-backyard into a garden that nobody would want to leave. We wanted our garden to have plenty of evergreen trees and bushes so that it would always look pretty, in any season. To balance green and blue colors of spruces, we wanted to add red Japanese maples and birches with white trunks. We wanted to make garden luxurious, busy with plants of various heights. It must have had roads to reach every corner of the garden in any weather, and these roads must have made of an old-looking clay brick, full of color. Around the passages – to have a solid border of boxwood bushes, to complement brick and give a charming combination of color, texture, and scent. And behind boxwood we wanted to plant roses, thus protect them from wind and drought and show only the most beautiful parts of them. We also wanted to have sufficient light so we could sit or walk in our “park” the evenings.
We started to draw our backyard design on paper. Then we moved to Corel Draw graphical editing software to map our dream of immaculate garden with precision.
Here’s is the plan we came up with:
And here is how we progressed:
Finally, here is how our “park” looks like now:
We enjoy it in any season, although summer, of course, is the best.
But you should better come to see it for yourself. Walk a circle to feel the tranquility!

Exterior Design
During our trip to St. Petersburg this year, we’ve got inspired with sky-blue color of Cameron Gallery palace building where Empress Catherine II of Russia resided and wanted to use the same idea for our house exterior.
Molding decorations is a state of art. We reproduced some of them around windows and doors.
Massive raised moldings around windows and doors create nice relief and drop dark blue shades. Fluted columns alternate blue and white.
White moldings emphasize blue on walls and all together create mood of joy and beauty. It looks great in daytime, or sunset, and every time produces slightly different picture of shades. You’ll never get tired of it!

Energy Efficient House in Oakville
We’ve put out extra efforts to make the house energy efficient:
- Installed new good quality window, doors, and patio doors
-
Insulated
- From outside with 2-inch thick styrofoam and stucco dryvit (with decorative mouldings)
- Inside low-level – with R20 insolation on the walls
- Cathedral ceiling is done with triple insulation, safe-and-sound thermo and styrofoam, with reflecting silver vapor barrier
- New tankless Rinnai water heater, condensing type, currently best on the market, 98% efficient, replaced old-fashioned energy sucker rented hot water tank
- Energy-efficient gas clothes dryer Bosh (which is also gentle on the clothes)
- Gas cooking range Bertazzoni helps cut on electricity bill as well
These improvements make a real difference in hydro and gas bills!
